The works shown here focus on the process of gold smelting. The objects express the commonly observed melting process in three very different ways: The shimmering and vibrating gold in its liquid state that only becomes visible when the oxide layer above the molten mass cracks.
In alchemy, Nigredo refers to the stage where the impure is converted into the pure and noble, such as gold, through a transformation process. To gain one single gram of gold, modern day gold miners crush and break up to a tonne of rock, extracting the precious metal with the help of toxic chemicals – an example that clearly illustrates the extent of environmental destruction involved in the extraction of this precious substance, gold. Neither on an industrial nor on an individual level can making gold be practiced without destruction. That is the subject of this work.
